What is an Apprenticeship?

  • An apprenticeship provides experience in the workplace and an opportunity to gain qualifications, up to a postgraduate degree, whilst receiving a salary.
  • Whoever you are, whatever your background it is a way to kick-start or change your career and develop new skills.
  • They are open to all ages and usually take between one and four years to complete.

Apprenticeships are changing

  • The government is introducing the apprenticeship levy in April 2017. The levy requires all employers within the UK, with an annual pay bill over £3 million to invest in apprenticeships.
  • This is estimated to cost £20m each year across public sector organisations in Hertfordshire.
  • The levy provides a great opportunity for HCC to continue developing a well-established Apprenticeship scheme creating even more opportunities for both new and current employees.

What is HCC doing about the Levy?

  • We aim to use the levy to create more opportunities for newly recruited apprentices and existing employees.
  • We want to inspire people to consider apprenticeships as valid and credible routes to a rewarding career and maximise the levy to address existing skill shortages.
  • We are currently developing the Hertfordshire Apprenticeship Programme (HAP) to make best use of the levy, maximising it to the benefit of skills and learning throughout the workforce and county.

What is the Hertfordshire Apprenticeship Alliance (HAA)?

  • The HAA brings together the public organisations in Hertfordshire, working to maximise the opportunities from the apprenticeship levy.
  • The HAA believe that this is a once in a generation opportunity to unlock the skills shortages within the county and beyond.
