Welwyn Garden City Town Centre

We're working closely with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council developing a scheme to enhance the area around Welwyn Garden City town centre.

We're proposing to improve pedestrian and cycling areas and new road layout in places.

We'd like to hear your views before 31 August 2017.

Steps in this project

Step 1: Early options (current stage)

In 2014, we conducted an investigation into traffic circulation issues in Welwyn Garden City town centre.

We're exploring potential options for reducing traffic issues and improving the town centre experience for everyone.

We developed different options for the scheme which we shared with local residents and businesses.

Step 2: Further consultation

We consulted with local businesses, user groups, and the public in July 2017. This included two public exhibition days at the Howard Centre on the 22 and 24 July. This gave us valuable feedback to help us with our plans. All views fed back to us will be considered as we develop our proposals.

If the scheme continues:

  • We'll send residents and local businesses a survey in the post if you live near the area towrads the end of 2017.
  • We'll also consult with other stakeholder groups (councillors, council officers, emergency services and user groups) by the end of 2017.
  • We'll consult on any changes to current street regulations (such as double yellow lines, and one-way systems) through Traffic Regulation Orders early 2018.

Step 3: Outline and detailed design

Once all consultations have been completed, we'll develop our designs.

Step 4: Construction

Subject to funding, we'll look to start work on the scheme in 2018/19.

We may trial temporary road layouts before any work takes place to test our proposal.

We'll do everything we can to minimise disruption during construction. All businesses will keep access to their premises.
