Navy salutes Garden Fields School, St Albans
Well done to year 4 pupils, Zoe Power and Charlotte Durndell from Garden Fields School in St Albans. The pair won our annual Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) Christmas Art Competition. The competition invites local primary school children to design artwork for Armed forces units serving away from home over Christmas.
Schools sent posters and messages to HMS St Albans, the 254 Medical Unit in Hitchin and the Joint Forces Command Unit in Northwood.
The Hertfordshire AFC is a commitment from organisations like ours, to support the active and retired local armed forces community.
Teresa Heritage, Chair of the Hertfordshire AFC Board, introduced a special morning assembly at the school. Petty Officer, Bethany Burton from HMS St Albans, presented a special plaque.
Winners received a trophy and sports equipment voucher for their school from Ringway. Capt. Jonathan Heffernan and Sgt Patrick Slaney, from 254 Medical Regiment rounded the morning off with a question-and-answer session. Children then had the chance to look around a fully-equipped battlefield ambulance.
Petty Officer Burton said: “Being away from our families at Christmas can be hard. To have all this wonderful art and seasonal greetings was a real boost for everyone on board.”
