Hertfordshire County Council

The Coronation of King Charles III is a good opportunity for our community across Hertfordshire to come together to celebrate.

We're keen to mark this historical event by encouraging volunteering at events and activities in Hertfordshire over the Coronation weekend.

Big events taking place over the Coronation weekend

  • Saturday 6 May – the Coronation of His Majesty the King Charles III.
  • Sunday 7 May (afternoon) – St Albans Cathedral Coronation Evensong, 4pm onward
  • Monday 8 May – bank holiday.

The Big Help Out

The Big Help Out is a community volunteering initiative. Thousands of organisations are marking the King’s Coronation by giving everybody the chance to volunteer. It starts on Monday 8 May.

More information will be available from 20 March 2023, though you can register your interest now.

Street parties

Street parties are a great traditional way to mark the Coronation and we're proud of the number of street parties held over past events, particularly the Jubilee in 2022.

Close a road for a street party or special event – if you'd like to run a street party and need to close a local road.

Funding to support local events

If you'd like to hold a local event and are looking for additional funding, there are a range of grants that you may be able to apply for. Here are some grant opportunities we're currently aware of:

District and borough coronation events and volunteering

Volunteering and events guidance

Funded by Hertfordshire County Council, GoVolHerts is for people who want to volunteer and local charities who need volunteers.

They currently have 600 volunteering opportunities and 230 Hertfordshire charities.

Whether you're looking for a one-off opportunity or a longer term commitment, there's something for everyone.

Inclusive volunteering

The challenge for voluntary groups and organisations is to provide opportunities that appeal to and engage with people from as wide a range of backgrounds and lifestyles as possible.

Consider how you promote your organisation as inclusive and welcoming to all. Use words and images that convey diversity whilst reflecting your ethos and activities. Advertise opportunities to volunteer as widely as possible using a variety of means such as leaflets, posters, volunteering development agencies, social networking sites and local media.

Ask key questions as you develop volunteering opportunities:

  • How are differing ideas heard and valued in developing opportunities?·
  • How are we ensuring volunteering opportunities are accessible?
  • How are we considering financial barriers and perception of roles?
  • How are we promoting opportunities?

Organising an event to celebrate the King's Coronation?

We're keen to see many events and activities take place across the county to celebrate the coronation, though safety is obviously the priority. Each local council has guidance on delivering safe events – here are some examples:

For larger events, we'd recommend that you make contact with your local Safety Advisory Group (check with your district or borough council). This is particularly important if holding an event which involves a large gathering of people.

Certain events may also require a licence or permission from the land owner.
