Walking is one of the easiest ways most of us can become a little bit more active – whether that’s walking to work or school, exploring your local countryside or simply building up the number of steps you take each day.
So during May, to celebrate National Walking Month, we want to see as many people as possible give walking a try. Here are a few ideas to inspire you to step out…
Health walks are a great place to start – a series of over 60 free guided walks each week that enable people of all ages and abilities to experience the best of their local area. There’s also a Mass Health Walk taking place on 14 May – find your local participating walk and join the fun!
Free, themed walks are also available throughout the month through our Walks & More programme, which are a great opportunity to explore Hertfordshire's beautiful countryside, learn local history and have a fun family day out. There are even special events for International Dawn Chorus Day on 7 May where you can learn to identify distinctive birdsong.
There are Walking Festivals taking place in Stevenage (5–13 May), Hatfield (14-20 May) and the Chilterns (19 May-3 June) which are all running guided walks and special activities to help you discover new areas and learn new skills. Themes include wildlife, local history walks and canal walks.
If walking alone is more your thing, could you #Try20 and challenge yourself to walk for 20 minutes every day throughout May or take yourself on a self-guided tour using a Rights of Way map.
If you played football, netball and even squash in your youth, there’s no reason to retire your skills. New walking versions of your favourite sports can get you back in the game! For clubs and leagues in your local area contact Charlie Mann at Herts Sports partnership.
Or you could turn your hand to volunteering to help Hertfordshire's children get more active by leading a Walking Bus to help them get to school. Walk to School week begins on 21 May so now is a great time to find out more.
To celebrate the month, £100 of HF Holidays vouchers and a FitBit Flex 2 are up for grabs - all you have to do is share a photo of you on your favourite walk via the Hertfordshire Year of Physical Activity Facebook page.
