Eight young people in Cheshunt have successfully completed The Prince’s Trust Team programme, run by Hertfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service.
The programme is a 12 week personal development course that helps unemployed 16-25 year olds develop the skills and experience, along with the confidence and motivation, to find work or go on to further education or training.
All the candidates have now achieved a recognised Prince’s Trust qualification, which they were presented with at a ceremony in the De’Vere Hotel in front of friends and family members.
One of the people taking part, Anna Irvine, 19, said: “Before I came on the course I had been out of work for six months and was starting to give up hope of ever getting back into employment.”
“Since completing the team programme, I am now set to start a Business Administration Apprenticeship at a law firm in Hertford.”
Also completing the course was 18-year-old Jamie Bennett, who was struggling to find employment due to his lack of relevant skills and work experience. It was through the Job Centre that Jamie found out about the course and decided to give it a chance.
He said: “At the beginning of the course I didn’t know what I was doing but then I quickly started to open up to everyone. As a team we’ve bonded so well and helped each other through many different challenges.”
“This course gave me a reason to get up in the mornings and I’ve gained many more skills and qualifications that can help me in the future with finding a job.”
The Prince’s Trust programme involves:
• a residential team-building week
• a community project
• interview and presentation skills
• help with CV writing
• help with gaining work experience placements and references.
Many of the young people will now pursue college courses, continue with work experience and volunteering placements, and some will take up job offers and apprenticeships they secured while on the programme.
This Cheshunt-based team programme is just one of several the county council’s fire service has run in partnership with the Prince’s Trust. Three more programmes have also taken place in Hatfield, Stevenage and Watford. For more information, or to apply for the next programme, please see: www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/princestrust
