Ten young people in Hatfield have successfully completed The Prince’s Trust Team programme, run by Hertfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service.
The programme is a 12 week personal development course that helps unemployed 16-25 year olds develop the skills and experience, along with the confidence and motivation, to find work or go on to further education or training.
All the candidates have now achieved a recognised Prince’s Trust qualification, which they were presented with at a ceremony on Wednesday 6 December at the Riding School, Hatfield House in front of friends and family members.
One of the people taking part, Katy Hunter, 17, said: “The Prince’s Trust programme has given me my passion back. It has shown me what route I want to go down in life and provided me the tools to get there.”
Also completing the course was 24-year-old Daniel Smith who, after being in and out of work, had no idea what to do next. Daniel previously completed the programme in 2010, and found the experience to be very beneficial. He asked to do it again, and this time completed it at a higher level.
He said: “I was low and needed a pick up after having issues with employment. I knew this programme would be the best thing for me.
“The experience was brilliant once again, and I have now applied to study Computer Science at university.
“The program has raised my self-confidence again. It has helped me on my next step moving forward.”
The Prince’s Trust programme involves:
• a residential team-building week
• a community project
• interview and presentation skills
• help with CV writing
• help with gaining work experience placements and references.
Many of the young people will now pursue college courses, continue with work experience and volunteering placements, and some will take up job offers and apprenticeships they secured while on the programme.
This Hatfield-based team programme is just one of several the county council’s fire service has run in partnership with the Prince’s Trust. Three more programmes have also taken place in Watford, Stevenage and Cheshunt. For more information, or to apply for the next programme, please see: www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/princestrust
