H is for HAFLS
“I teach learners of a wide range of ages from incredibly diverse backgrounds across Hertfordshire” says Louisa, a Skills for Work Adult Learning Teacher, within the Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service (HAFLS) team.
Louisa has worked in HAFLS for four years, providing a wide range of affordable learning opportunities that support adults to gain new skills and enable them to fulfil their potential.
“Having lived in Hertfordshire for over 20 years, I wanted to work in a job that I felt was worthwhile within my local community” she said.
“There are so many things I love about my job. It’s a fantastic feeling helping people to realise how good they truly are. Unlocking their potential and helping them to overcome negative experiences in their lives. This could range from a bad experience at school to being caught up in war conflict in another country.
Lots of people who benefit from our courses start off lacking confidence – and this is where our courses come in. The courses instil confidence and improve self-esteem in a safe environment where no one is judged”
It is clearly a hugely satisfying and worthwhile role for Louisa who added: “Seeing someone build their confidence and progress, only to realise they had this potential within them all along, it’s truly life-changing for them and that is a very rewarding aspect of my role.
HAFLS works with over 7,000 individuals each year, with the majority aged over 19 but also provide courses for families and young people ages 16 – 24.
HAFLS encourages and provides enjoyable learning experiences for Hertfordshire residents, in particular those who are most in need or have the least opportunity to achieve formal and informal qualifications.
