The county council is doing everything possible to assist our residents in the current cold weather and our highways team are out gritting up and down the county to keep Hertfordshire moving.
Our vulnerable and older residents are being cared for with teams delivering hot lunches through the meals on wheels service and home care staff are heading out on their usual rounds to deliver care to those in need. Our home care teams have special 4x4 vehicles to get to anyone who lives in rural areas that are harder to reach and most affected by the snow.
Eligible members of the community can also apply for the Hertfordshire warmer homes scheme to help them stay warm in wintry conditions.
In addition to their usual duties, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have opened an Incident Coordination Centre (ICC) and the team managing this centre is coordinating the deployment of 4x4 vehicles across the county during periods of severe weather. These vehicles are made up of cars from Hertfordshire County Council’s fleet alongside volunteers from the community who own 4x4 vehicles. The ICC process entails county council departments and partner agencies, triaging their requests for a 4x4 vehicle based on risk to life (for example to support vulnerable members of the community) and then calling the ICC on a dedicated number. A Fire and Rescue Service officer will then prioritise calls for assistance and deploy assets appropriately.
Our highways teams have made nine gritting runs since Monday and have been ensuring primary routes are accessible for our residents. We also continue to monitor the forecast from our 13 weather stations situated across the county so that we can make informed decisions as early as possible. During severe weather conditions, we also work closely with the farming community in Hertfordshire and supply them with snow ploughs that can fit onto their tractors so they can clear any rural lanes which we can’t get to. They are currently on standby should we need them.
