Following a Resources Cabinet panel meeting that took place yesterday to discuss the future of Cuffley Camp, David Williams, Cabinet Member for Resources at Hertfordshire County Council, made the following comments:
“We understand and share residents’ concern about the future of this much loved outdoor camping facility.
“At the Resources Cabinet panel yesterday, members agreed a set of recommendations to be put forward to Cabinet on Monday 13 November, following a review of Cuffley Camp’s sustainability as a self-financing facility operated by the County Council.
“The review has revealed that the County Council is unlikely to be able to maintain the levels of investment required to bring the facility up to the standards needed to compete with alternative facilities and provide a compelling service for the future. Such investment would not be the best use of taxpayers’ money.
“The recommendation therefore is that the County Council should negotiate with the landlord to seek a withdrawal from its lease at Cuffley Camp and commit to engage with the landlord to promote the site’s continued use as an outdoor education centre.”
