Hertfordshire Independent Living Service (HILS) was established by Hertfordshire County Council in 2007 to provide a meals on wheels service. Over the last ten years this has developed to provide a range of caring services to support vulnerable and older people to live happily, healthily, and independently at home.
Offering hot meals and other caring services 365 days a year, HILS helped to support the independence of over 11,000 people in Hertfordshire last year, and delivers around half a million meals every year.
Teresa Strickland is one of the Community Team members at HILS, helping to deliver the hot meals and desserts to clients across the county. Whether it’s plating up the meals and bringing clients a drink, reminding clients to take their medication, or just having a friendly chat and a laugh, it’s more than just a meal that Teresa is delivering.
“My role involves delivering meals; I have a really good relationship with the people that I go to on my rounds, so I enjoy having a bit of banter with them, and seeing them every day. I really enjoy making a difference to the people’s lives – we are often the only person someone will see in a day”.
“We deliver in all weather conditions, come rain, shine or snow – we will be there 365 days a year to make sure people are healthy and safe, and giving peace of mind to the relatives” Teresa told us.
HILS client Margaret 83, says: “The food is good, the service is reliable, and the drivers are very, very kind. I have a friend that might have meals on wheels now, because I’ve told her how good they are!”
“The food is delicious and wholesome. The meals are delivered by lovely staff who always have a smile and a kind word” client Margaret adds.
A recent customer survey found that 90% of clients who receive a Meals on Wheels service feel less lonely and 94% of people said it has helped them stay living at home.
