Local residents can now visit Berkhamsted's brand new library, in the heart of the town centre, which opened today.
Andrew Bignell, Head of Libraries and Heritage Services said “We have listened to the feedback of local residents in planning a new library for Berkhamsted and I am delighted that we have been able to create this bright, welcoming, flexible, tech-enabled library space in the heart of the town. I hope it will be seen as a vibrant resource for the whole community.”
Berkhamsted’s new library contains a children’s area and separate teenage area, a study space, a self-service printing and free Wi-Fi. It also has a flexible meeting room for hire by community groups, and the shelving is on wheels, so that space can be created for events in the library. It is part of a three storey building built on the site of the old police station; the ground floor houses the new purpose-built library and the floors above are retirement flats.
The library’s varied events programme kicks off next week with two family events. Our first Baby Rhyme Time will be on Tuesday 16th May, 10.30-11.00am and on Friday 19th May, 10.15-11.00am, we’ll be having our first weekly Story Sacks session, delivered by Dacorum Rural Children’s Centre as part of a partnership agreement with the library. The Story Sacks sessions involve interactive storytelling using various props that are in a sack. Families are able to borrow sacks from the Children’s Centre in the new library at the weekly sessions.
We are changing the library’s opening times along with its new location. We consulted with local library users who told us they would prefer to have the library opening for longer during the day on Monday, instead of late opening, so we’ve changed the opening hours to reflect this. Berkhamsted residents will still be able to access their library out of hours from autumn, with the help of the new Open+ technology that has been installed to enable self-service access for library users.
Berkhamsted library’s new opening hours are:
Monday: 09.30am – 5.30pm
Tuesday: 09.30am – 5.00pm
Wednesday: 09.30am – 5.00pm
Friday: 09.30am – 5.00pm
Saturday: 09.30 – 4.00pm
