With the current wet weather in Hertfordshire today we are reminding residents to be prepared. There is a risk of thundery bursts with heavy rain potentially leading to localised flooding, so please take extra care on the roads.
If you’re driving, please see the below safety tips:
If there is flooding on the roads, do not drive through the floodwater. Even fairly shallow water can cause serious damage to your car and just six inches can cause a car to lose control or stall.
Keep your speed down and drive to the conditions – especially if heavy rain is affecting your visibility. Keep your headlights on during downpours and slow down and enjoy the journey.
Leave Extra Room
Take care and leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front. Also be aware of cyclists and motorcyclists around you as they may be more difficult to spot during heavy downpours.
Beware of Hazards
Keep an eye out for any hazards on or near the road, and make sure to report any issues with the road. If you see any fallen trees or other highways issues please report them to us at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/highwayfaults
Plan your journey carefully, checking weather and traffic bulletins regularly. Also make sure to allow extra time for your journey.
If you see flood water that doesn’t drain away, please report it so we can deal with any problems and check drainage systems to make sure they’re working properly.
