Darryl Keen, Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection for Hertfordshire County Council, has given the following update:
"Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, East of England Ambulance Service, Hertfordshire Police and care home provider HC-One worked together following reports of an explosion and fire at Woodlands View care home in Stevenage at 4.30 Saturday afternoon (3rd February). The fire was out by 5pm.
Seven people were taken to Lister hospital and sadly one man in his 80's died. A woman in her eighties, the man's long-term partner who was visiting the care home at the time, remains in critical care in Lister hospital but is now in a stable condition. The other five were discharged.
Hertfordshire County Council Adult Social Care services continue to work closely with the care home provider, HC- One, to ensure the welfare of residents affected by the fire. Some were moved to alternative care homes and some were moved to a different area of the care home. Our team are in constant communication with them and their relatives to give them the latest information.
The joint response from all the emergency services and staff at the home during the incident was commendable. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
Our thoughts are with all those affected."
