From working with young people, to chronicling the history of Hertfordshire, our volunteers give up their time to help others and make a difference in their local communities. Adrian, Jim and Rosaria are just three of hundreds of people who help the council deliver vital services for our residents.
Adrian volunteers as a Youth Mentor. He decided he wanted to give something back after reflecting on the difficulties he experienced in his own childhood and youth mentoring felt like an obvious choice. He said:
“My role as a mentor is to help young people bring about the changes they want to see in their lives. It is a great privilege to work with young people.”

Jim started volunteering at a Broxbourne Day service two days a week, making toast and drinks for people on arrival and helping to run activities like circle dancing, card games and quizzes.
He said: “I really like working with the staff and people who come to the service – I love to see everyone’s smiling faces and it's great to know that I am making a difference.”
Rosaria Borgeat from Harpenden has been volunteering for Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies for the past ten months. She has been working on a project to explore the folklore and stories that make Hertfordshire Unique.
She said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a volunteer and feel I have been welcomed into the archives team, who have also been willing to let me develop and learn new skills such as recording oral histories.
“I would advise anyone with a few spare hours a week to see what opportunities are available to them across the county – the process of signing up is really very simple. It is so rewarding and I’m pleased to be keeping my brain active, forming new friendships and developing my knowledge in a completely new area.”
