Hertfordshire County Council

Herts in Focus – our photo competition 2017

Get your spectacular images featured on our website.

What does Hertfordshire mean to you?

Send us your images showcasing Hertfordshire and you could win:

We'd like to thank Champneys, Hatfield House, Hertford Theatre and Chadwell Springs for generously donating these prizes.

Who can enter?

  • All UK residents aged over 18.
  • You don't need to live in Hertfordshire, but your submitted photographs must be taken in Hertfordshire.
  • Hertfordshire County Council employees can't win a prize but we still encourage your participation. You'll have the chance to see your photos displayed in an online exhibition and used to represent Hertfordshire on our website.

How to enter

  • Fill in our competition entry form and upload your photo submission.
  • You can only upload 1 photo per form, but you can submit as many forms as you like.
  • Please ensure image sizes are no larger than 25MB.

Deadline for entries

Tuesday 31 October 2017, 5pm.

What we're looking for

We're looking for a collection of images that we can use across our website.

We'd love to see images of...

  • Hertfordshire landscapes in autumn, winter, spring and summer.
  • Park life, people doing activities, playing sports.
  • Rural and urban landscapes.
  • Beautiful buildings and monuments.
  • Hertfordshire residents (providing permission has been granted from everyone featured for image use).
  • Hertfordshire wildlife and nature photography.
  • Artistic abstract shots.

Advice for choosing your submission(s)

  • Images must be large and high quality. It will be better to submit photos taken on a camera, but if you have a high resolution camera on your phone camera, this may be okay.
  • All photos must be submitted digitally, via the competition entry form.
  • Photos featuring people must only be submitted with the consent of the featured individuals.
  • Photographs shouldn’t be too busy – keep your composition simple! These work best on our website.
  • Landscape photos are preferred as they work better on our website.
  • Sometimes when using an image on the website we will crop it. For example, our header images (the image banner at the top of each webpage) are long and narrow. Keep in mind how your photo might look on different areas of the website.

How we'll pick a winner

  • An esteemed judging panel will judge entries anonymously.
  • They're looking for inspirational photos of Hertfordshire which are aesthetically pleasing and really highlight the qualities of the county.
  • They'll also judge based on how well the images are suited for display purposes on the website and other digital platforms.
  • We're unable to award prizes to Hertfordshire County Council employees – only external entrants will be in the running for a prize.

What happens next

  • We'll announce the winner and 3 runners up 2 weeks after the closing date.
  • If you're a winner, we'll contact you via phone or email. If we can't reach you within 5 days of first contacting you, we may pass the prize along to the next runner up.
  • A selection of our favourite photos will be displayed in an online public exhibition. All images in the exhibition will be credited to the photographers.
  • We'll use your spectacular images across our site.

Terms and conditions

  • The competition is run by Hertfordshire County Council (“HCC”), County Hall, Pegs Lane, Hertfordshire, SG13 8DE ("the Promoter").
  • The title of the competition is Herts in Focus (“the Competition”).
  • The Competition will run from 9am on Friday 29 September 2017 (“the Opening Date”) to 5pm on Tuesday 31 October 2017 (“the Closing Date”).
  • To enter the Competition you must complete and submit the online competition entry form and upload your submission (which must be taken in Hertfordshire and must not exceed 25MB in size) by the Closing Date. All competition entries received after the Closing Date will not be considered.
  • The Competition details (above) form part of these terms and conditions. When entering the Competition, entrants agree to accept and be bound by these terms and conditions.
  • The Competition is open to all UK residents aged 18 or over only. Proof of age may be required.
  • HCC employees (excluding the HCC Web Team) may enter the Competition but prizes will only be awarded to external entrants. Employees of HCC are however still encouraged to participate as there is an opportunity for their image(s) to be displayed in an online public exhibition and used to represent the Promoter on its website.
  • The Competition entries will be judged anonymously by a panel of 3 HCC employees (“the Panel”). The Panel will be looking for inspirational photos of Hertfordshire which are aesthetically pleasing and highlight the qualities of the county (“the Criteria”). The Panel will select their winner and runners up based on the Criteria and how well they are suited for display purposes on the website and other digital platforms. The decision of the Panel (acting reasonably) is final.
  • There will be 1 winner and 3 runners up. There is 1 prize per person only.
  • The winner of the Competition (“the Winner”) and the 3 runners up will be announced 2 weeks after the Closing Date.
  • The Promoter will contact the Winner and runners up personally using the preferred method of contact, as requested on the submission form.
  • If the Winner and/or the runners up cannot be contacted or are not available, or have not claimed their prize within 5 working days of the Announcement Date, the Promoter reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible winner (and that winner will need to respond to the notification within 5 working days).
  • The Promoter will send the name and county of the Winner to anyone who writes within one month after the Closing Date of the Competition requesting details of the winner and who encloses a self-addressed envelope to the Web Team, Hertfordshire County Council, County Hall, Pegs Lane, Hertford, SG13 8DE.
  • The Promoter shall use and take care of any personal information you supply to it as described in the Promoter's privacy policy and in accordance with the Data Protection Legislation.
  • The Promoter will not use your details provided to contact you, except for communications regarding your competition entry. Once the Competition ends the Promoter will not keep your details.
