A first for Hertfordshire Health Walks: exciting new Ambassador opportunity

Published: 28 Sep 2017

Hertfordshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service has created a brand new Ambassador role and is on the hunt for passionate local walkers to help with the smooth running of the Hertfordshire Health Walks programme.

For the first time, a new network of Ambassadors across the county will be created to support the programme with awareness-raising around the many health and wellbeing benefits of walking in a group. Some residents may already participate in the organised walks and want to volunteer, but have been waiting for the right position to come up. This is the role for you.

An Ambassador will attend and promote the walks at health and wellbeing awareness events, provide talks to community groups and organisations who are potential walkers and actively seek out opportunities for promotion and building partnerships within the local community. They will also get the chance to use social media to promote the Health Walks locally, engaging with local press and assisting the Countryside Management Service with volunteer walk leader recruitment drives. Training will be provided.

Cabinet Member for Public Health, Richard Roberts said “Our Health Walks already attract huge numbers of participants and volunteer leaders. This is a great new role which will really help us improve participation and spread the word locally about the Hertfordshire Health Walks. The initiative could benefit greatly from the support of local residents to help identify potential walkers which could be anyone, from young or old, families, teenagers or elderly residents looking for a way to keep active.”

The Hertfordshire Health Walks are short, regular and free walks designed to help participants increase their physical activity levels, improve their wellbeing and feel fitter and healthier while enjoying Hertfordshire’s green spaces. Currently, over 300 volunteer walk leaders ensure 60 walks take place every week, all through the year and are enjoyed by over 3,000 people. However many more residents could be benefitting from the Health Walks.

Countryside Management Service is hoping to recruit one or two Ambassadors for each district.
