Once finished, the roadworks will have improved the route between the A10 and Stevenage by tackling inadequate junctions and frequent traffic jams caused by right-turning vehicles blocking traffic at peak times. The roadworks were due to be completed by the end of March, but were delayed by the adverse winter weather conditions and by the discovery of asbestos in the existing A10 junction, which had to be removed by specialists, and the need to coordinate with water and telecoms companies. These earlier delays have meant the A602 project has run into the time period allocated to other planned work being carried out by the county council and also Highways England. This has further disrupted the A602 project. Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “It is disappointing that this project has suffered from so many delays, which I know is causing inconvenience and frustration for many residents and motorists. We are working hard to make sure that our contractor completes the work as quickly as possible. I’d like to apologise to everyone affected by the on-going delays and reassure people that the end result will be much needed improvements to this very busy road.” Although the carriageway works should be completed by the end of June and the junctions fully operational, some other work such as landscaping, footway work and the removal of site compounds will continue through July.
