A602 Update

Published: 27 Sep 2017

Work on the long awaited A602 improvements between Stevenage and Ware started last month with the first two stages well underway.

Good progress has been made with work starting at Hertford Road junction in Stevenage and the Anchor Lane junction, near Ware. Diversion routes are in place and work has been scheduled in phases to try and ease disruption. The work to improve Westmill Road and the A10 junction will commence on 20 October and 27 November respectively.

At the Hertford Road junction work has commenced in the west verge to provide a new area of road and preparatory works for the construction of the extensions to the subways. A series of night road closures of the A602 will commence on 27 September 08:00pm to 05:00am.These are required to remove the existing roundabout and to install temporary supports (sheet piles) to enable construction of the new sections of the subway.

At the Anchor Lane junction works have commenced in the east verge to create a new area of road. Night closures have been in progress over the past week to remove the existing roundabout. Work will now continue on the east side of the junction to create a larger roundabout, extra lanes on the approaches to the new roundabout and improved drainage.

Ralph Sangster, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “These works form part of Hertfordshire County Council's on-going commitment to maintain and improve our roads for the benefit of all road users in Hertfordshire. This is a major project and once completed motorists should notice a real difference.

"We appreciate that roadworks are not always easy to contend with but we are working to ensure that minimal disruption is caused, especially at peak times. We would ask everyone for their co-operation while the work is in progress.”

This phase of work is expected to complete by March 2018.
