A volunteer dedicated to protecting Hertfordshire residents from fires won the District Volunteer of the Year award at a special ceremony held at County Hall last week.
Rosemary Brace was named Hertfordshire County Council’s District Volunteer of the Year for East Herts and Broxbourne at the ninth annual awards ceremony for Community Protection volunteers.

The awards celebrated the successes of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Trading Standards volunteers, and the staff who work with them.

Rosemary has given over 1,000 hours of her time since becoming a volunteer. She predominantly works out of Ware and Hertford, however she also supports the Fire Cadet Unit at Cheshunt for two hours every week, not only supporting the uniformed instructors but also being approachable directly by the Cadets. Without Rosemary’s dedication to the Fire Cadet Unit at Cheshunt, there are several evenings that would have, had to be cancelled.

The volunteers were presented with their awards by Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection Darryl Keen.

Darryl said: “These awards are the service’s way of recognising and thanking committed volunteers for their fantastic work in the community. All of our volunteers give up their free time to protecting Hertfordshire residents from dangers such as fire, counterfeit goods and rogue traders. We are extremely proud and grateful to them, and the staff who work with them, for everything that they do.”

Terry Hone, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “This year marks the Community Protection volunteer scheme’s tenth anniversary and these awards are the perfect way to celebrate the fantastic work of our Community Protection volunteers. They have made a huge difference over the years, working with the operational crews and community safety teams to increase the number of people we can reach with safety advice and practical help.”
