Hertfordshire County Council supports mums to feed their newborns

Published: 19 Jun 2018

Hertfordshire County Council supports the Unicef baby friendly initiative which promotes responsive feeding for bottle and breast feeding and this National Breastfeeding Week (20 – 26 June) we reflect back on all the good work done in Hertfordshire to support mums.

Hertfordshire Children’s Centres are now fully Unicef UK Baby Friendly accredited and mums can get support or be signposted to other support via their children’s centres who all welcome breastfeeding. There are support groups around Hertfordshire to help you with feeding your baby, whether you're breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. Health visitors are also available to provide advice and support for all mothers, whatever they choose to do.

Unicef and the World Health Organisation recommend exclusive breastfeeding up to six months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. Breastfeeding has significant health benefits for both mum and baby, including a lower risk of stomach and respiratory infections and allergies for babies as well as a reduced risk of obesity and diabetes for both mum and baby.

Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Teresa Heritage, said: “There is a great deal of support in Hertfordshire to provide new mums with the help they need to make the right choice for them and their baby at what can be a vulnerable time and I would urge expectant mothers to visit their children’s centre to see what support is available.”

After accessing breastfeeding support at their local children’s centre’s really positive feedback is often given, including a mum who said ‘the breastfeeding support group had a  really welcoming and reassuring atmosphere, the encouragement and support provided makes me feel really positive’.

Mums who haven’t been able to breastfeed before and were anxious about a current pregnancy have found that the support is invaluable.

Hertfordshire Children’s Centres will be celebrating breastfeeding week with a range of events occurring across the county. Information on the events can be found on our website: www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/breastfeeding
