Hertfordshire supports Disney's 10 Minute Shake Up programme

To help children in Hertfordshire get more active throughout the summer holidays, Hertfordshire County Council is helping to promote the Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Ups programme with Disney.
A new survey from Public Health England and Disney found that being active makes most 5-11 year olds feel happier, more confident and more sociable, according to their parents. However the number of children getting enough physical activity drops by 40 per cent as they move through primary school.
Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Richard Roberts, said: “We know it can be difficult to get children active, so we are pleased to support this campaign, which uses storytelling to make activity fun.
“One in five children in Hertfordshire (19.1%) start primary school overweight or obese, rising to nearly a third (29.4%) by the time they leave.
“While most children say they like being active, many worry about ‘not being very good’ or find a lack of activities they enjoy. This means that in the East of England 26 per cent of boys and just 17 per cent of girls meet the national recommended level of activity.
“The 10 Minute Shake Ups are a great way for children, their friends and the whole family to get moving this summer.”
The Shake Ups programme offers 10-minute games featuring characters from Disney Pixar’s latest animation Cars 3, as well as Disney’s Moana, Frozen Fever, Zootropolis, Beauty and the Beast and The Lodge.
The activities, designed for children to do anywhere in small or large groups with their friends, help children get more of the 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity they need each day for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight.
When children return to school in September, more activities will be released to encourage them to carry on being active both in and outside the classroom.
