Hertfordshire welcomes new national body for product recalls

Hertfordshire County Council has welcomed the government’s announcement that it is setting up a new national body to coordinate responses to large-scale product recalls.

The new Office for Product Safety and Standards will be based in the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and work is set to start straight away.

Terry Hone, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “We’ve been calling for a national body like this for some time, and our Trading Standards officers have been playing an important role in the national review of the product recall system, so we’re very pleased that the government has set up this new body.

“We know that product recalls don’t reach everyone, and that products that have been recalled for safety reasons are still in use in homes across Hertfordshire, so any improvements to the recall system will have real benefits for the safety of Hertfordshire residents.”

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has been set up to support local Trading Standards teams, and coordinate national recalls. There are no changes to the responsibilities of Hertfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards team.

Hertfordshire County Council is asking residents to register their domestic appliances, such as tumble dryers, fridges and washing machines, at www.registermyappliance.org.uk so that manufacturers can notify them about any recalls or safety concerns.
