Improvements for the A1081 London Road and Alma Road junction in St Albans

Published: 21 Mar 2019

The A1081 London Road will be getting essential pedestrian safety improvements during April at the junction with Alma Road.

The busy junction is a vital pedestrian route as well as an important route for traffic heading in and out of the city centre. There are safety concerns about the current pavements and crossing points and the county council is now improving the junction to make it safer for pedestrians and easier for people to get around the town on foot.

The county council’s highway contractors, Ringway, will be moving a pedestrian crossing, installing new tactile paving, replacing kerbs, improving road markings and resurfacing the pavements.

The works will start on Monday 1 April and are due to take six weeks to complete. To avoid disruption during the morning and evening rush hours, work will take place between 9:30am and 4:00pm, with temporary traffic lights in place between those times.

Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We want to make our road network safer for pedestrians and make it easier for people to get around on foot. We know these improvement works will be disruptive and I’d like to apologise in advance for the inconvenience. I hope people will bear with us while we make these important safety improvements, as the end result will be a safer junction for everyone.”
