New road surface for Grove Road, Hitchin

Published: 06 Aug 2018

Grove Road in Hitchin will be getting a new road surface and improved drainage as part of a summer of highways improvement works.

The section of Grove Road between Nightingale Road and Woolgrove Road needs work to replace the worn out road surface and to tackle frequent flooding problems. The contractors will be improving drainage, making repairs to the foundation of the road and laying a new surface.

The works start on 6 August and are planned to finish by 8 September.
The road will need to be closed while works take place, however the work will be done in phases so Grove Road will not be completely closed for the whole time. Details of road closure times can be found on our website at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/roadworks

Signed diversion routes will be in place throughout.

While crews are working in the area, they will also be resurfacing sections of the A505 Nightingale Road, A505 Fishponds Road and the A600 Bedford Road. These works will be carried out under overnight road closures during the hours of 8pm to 5am. A fully signed diversion route will be in place.

Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We’re carrying out these works during the school holidays when traffic is lighter to minimise disruption. I hope people will bear with us while we carry out these important works. While they will cause some delays for traffic, the end result will be smoother road surfaces, fewer potholes and less flooding.”

The main diversion route has low bridges that restrict access for tall vehicles, so we have made alternative arrangements for HGV access via Bury Mead. To minimise disruption this route is only available for businesses using tall vehicles, who we have notified in advance.
