New Ware recycling centre to begin construction in June

Published: 30 Apr 2019

Work to construct a new Ware Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Westmill Road will start in June, with the existing site closing on 29 May 2019.

The new ‘supersite’ will be four times larger than the existing site and will include:
• A split level design allowing the majority of waste to be deposited without the need for lifting or carrying up steps
• An internal access road to keep site users off the main road
• 38 parking/unloading spaces
• Fenced off areas so that full containers can be swapped without closing the centre
• A large Reuse Centre, with dedicated parking, where residents can deposit, browse and buy reusable items that would have otherwise been thrown away.

The site has been designed to handle up to 300,000 visits a year and up to 10,000 tonnes of waste a year.

However, while the new improved ‘supersite’ for residents is under construction the existing site will close for approximately a year from Wednesday 29 May 2019.

Simon Aries, Assistant Director for Waste and Environmental Management, said: “We’re really excited about the new centre, which will be the first supersite in Hertfordshire. I hope residents will bear with us while we carry out the improvement works. I know it’s a long time for the site to be closed, but I’m sure when it reopens in its new form everyone will agree it will have been worth it. The new site will be larger, easier to use and reduce delays and closures, which has to be a good thing for residents.

“With 100,000 new homes due to be built in Hertfordshire in the next 15 years it’s vital that we upgrade our facilities so that we can cope with the expected growth.”

While the Ware HWRC is closed, residents will be directed to the nearest alternative sites, which are:
• Hoddesdon – 6 miles, 12 minute drive time (closed Tuesday and Wednesday)
• Turnford – 10 miles, 18 minute drive time (closed Thursday and Friday)
• Stevenage - 10 miles, 18 minute drive time (closed Thursday and Friday)

Hoddesdon and Turnford are the closest sites for residents in the Ware area. Stevenage is the closest site for those living in the Hertford area. Directions and opening times are on the county council’s website at
