Open+ Technology more than doubles accessible hours at Croxley Green Library

Published: 19 Sep 2017

After a successful initial pilot period Hertfordshire County Council are pleased to be able to offer a huge increase in Open+ access at Croxley Green Library from the beginning of September.

Open+ is an integrated IT system which allows customers to access library buildings and facilities during unstaffed, non-core hours –extending access where the library would normally be closed.

The new hours give access from:

  • 7am, six days a week.
  • Open till 8pm Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Saturdays extended until 5pm.
  • Thursday Open+ hours are 7am – 8pm, where previously the library was closed.

Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Libraries, said: “This is really good news and I am delighted that with so many of our customers already using libraries' self-service kiosks, it has been easy for them to adapt to a card based entry system.”

Once registered for Open+ customers can benefit from extended library access straight away. This is managed through a card / pin number system located near the entrance, and the system will only allow access to a card holder. The Open+ systems manage the lighting, building controls, public IT access, self-service kiosks and security. Once customers exit, the relevant systems automatically shut down and the building is secure.

The focus is on flexibility and putting our customers first. Open+ offers more choice and is genuinely customer led. In Open+ Libraries we will be able to adjust to the needs of particular communities – offering additional access when they need it. There is also the potential for people to rediscover their local library as the additional access may be more convenient to their circumstances.

Terry Douris added: “A key part of Hertfordshire Libraries Inspiring Libraries Strategy is to find smart solutions to offer increased access to our services. Open+ is an exciting addition to our service and a great way to future proof Hertfordshire libraries and keep them relevant in the years to come.”

Residents can register for Open+ by applying directly at Croxley Green Library.
