Refill your water bottle at county council HQ

Published: 22 Jul 2019

You can refill your water bottle for free at County Hall in Hertford, as the county council has registered the building as a public refill station. The move is part of our commitment to reducing plastic pollution.

Using the free Refill app, people can find places to fill up their water bottle while they are out and about. There are already over 300 refill stations registered across Hertfordshire.

Refill is an award-winning campaign, which was launched by the not-for-profit organisation City to Sea in 2015 and is now being rolled out nationwide with support from Water UK and local water companies, such as Affinity Water in Hertfordshire. As part of this national campaign, Refill Hertfordshire has now been launched to help make refilling a water bottle easy, convenient and totally free.

Terry Hone, Cabinet Member for Waste Management, said: “We’re determined to do our part to reduce the huge number of plastic bottles being thrown away every year. That’s why we’ve registered County Hall as a public refill station. We need to make using a reusable bottle as simple and convenient as using a disposable bottle, and letting people fill up in our buildings is a simple and practical step we can take to help with that. Reusable cups are available at County Hall for those who may not have brought a bottle with them.”

“We’re also encouraging Hertfordshire businesses to register themselves as refill stations. As well as reducing plastic pollution it makes good business sense as well. Offering free water refills, encourages customers in and makes them view a business more favourably, so it’s a win for both the environment and the business.”

In the UK 13 billion single-use plastic bottles are used each year. 60% of these are water bottles. If just one in ten Brits refilled once a week, we would have 340 million less plastic bottles a year in circulation. It’s estimated that nationally the Refill scheme will cut plastic bottle use by tens of millions each year, as well as substantially increasing the availability of high-quality drinking water.
