Roadworks on Lower Luton Road in Harpenden

Published: 19 Jul 2019

Major roadworks will be taking place on the B653 Lower Luton Road in Harpenden at the junctions with Common Lane and Crabtree Lane between 27 July and 22 September.

The works are being carried out by Kier Construction, and their contractor Associated Asphalt, to improve access to and around the new Katherine Warington School on the edge of the town.

The road will remain open while the works take place with temporary traffic lights operating 24 hours a day to control the traffic past the works. The lights will be manually operated between 6am and 8pm to respond to traffic flows and minimise delays.

We expect these roadworks to cause significant delays during peak times. Please allow extra time for any journeys through this area while the works are in progress.

The works will include lowering the bank outside the school, building new entrances, installing new drainage and streetlights, constructing a new lay-by and bus stop, modifying the kerb line, modifying speed limits and building a new cycle lane and footpath.

Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways said: “It’s important that new developments are accompanied by improvements to our transport network, as otherwise pressure on our roads will only increase. These works are an important part of making sure students can get to and from the new Katherine Warington School safely, and will help reduce pressure on the roads in the area when the school opens.

“We’ve timed the work to largely take place during the school summer holidays when traffic is lighter to help keep disruption to a minimum. While these roadworks will inevitably cause some delays along the Lower Luton Road, in the long term they’ll help keep traffic flowing on this important route.”

This is the first in a series of schemes to improve road safety and minimise congestion around the new school site, and to make walking and cycling to the school a practical and attractive option for students and staff.
