Secondary school places announced for 2018

Published: 01 Mar 2018

Nearly 95 per cent of Hertfordshire children have been allocated a place at one of their preferred secondary or upper schools.

Despite an increase of 500 applications (3.7%) compared to last year, more children have been allocated a place at one of their ranked schools.

Of the 14,175 Hertfordshire children who applied this year, 13,384 have a place at a preferred school (94.4 per cent) and 11,081 children (78.1 per cent) gained a place at their first ranked school.

Most parents and carers in Hertfordshire will be able to find out the place their child has been allocated this afternoon (Thursday 1 March).*

Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Education, Libraries and Localism, said: “The transition to secondary or upper school education is an important stage for young people and their families so the county council recognises how vital it is that we make the application process as straightforward and smooth as possible. This year 99% of applications were made online, enabling applicant’s immediate access their account information with an email function for direct updates.

“Hertfordshire is fortunate in that it has many excellent schools that perform well above the national average which means we can be confident that our allocations process can offer the best possible education for children in the county.

“While I appreciate there may be a small number of parents that are disappointed with the school they have been allocated, I would encourage them to visit the school and speak to the head teacher before dismissing the offered place. They may be pleasantly surprised by what they see. They can also register their interest for their original preferred school by signing up to the Continuing Interest Lists.”

All applicants who have not been offered their first preference school will automatically be placed on the continuing interest list for any Hertfordshire schools named higher on the application form than the school offered.

All new applications for continuing interest must be made to Hertfordshire County Council for families living in Hertfordshire.

School places must be accepted by March 15, 2018. This is also the last date to 'opt out' of continuing interest. The deadline to submit an appeal is 4pm on March 29, 2018.
