Swap your old slippers for FREE

Published: 17 Sep 2019

Trade in your old worn out slippers for FREE at a ‘Slipper Swap’ social event being held at Hitchin Library on Tuesday 8 October and find out how to avoid falls and stay warm and well this winter.

Old worn out slippers are often responsible for trips and falls, which can lead to an unnecessary hospital stay and loss of independence. As we head into winter we organise ‘Slipper Swap’ events where older people and less mobile residents can swap their old slippers for a brand new free pair of anti-slip ones and find out more about keeping themselves safe and well

Visitors are invited to come along to one of the events for a cup of tea and a chat about social groups in their community. There’s also an opportunity to learn how to stay safe and warm with advice from occupational therapists, the fire service, community partners such as neighbourhood watch and Age UK Hertfordshire in attendance. Small Acts of Kindness are providing Warm in Winter gift bags and visitors will have the chance to have a go at some games and jigsaw puzzles, and browse memory boxes from libraries reminiscence collections.

Libraries are for more than borrowing books these days and library staff will be on hand to promote services available to older people, such as information, activities, the Home Library Service and the Carer’s Library Card.

Executive Member for Adult Care and Health, Richard Roberts, said: “Over the years we have successfully swapped over 900 pairs of slippers at our social events throughout Hertfordshire, and provided valuable information about the services and support that is available for older people. This is a great opportunity for older residents to meet with others in the community over a cup of tea and get some great support and advice.

There’s no need to book, just go along to the event between 10am – 1pm.
