Temporary closure of Old Nazeing Road, Cheshunt

Published: 02 Aug 2019

Old Nazeing Road in Cheshunt will be closed at the junction with Station Road from Monday 5 August to ensure the safety of residents and workers while structural works take place on the Nazeing New Road Bridge.

A temporary one-way system was put in place on Old Nazeing Road – between Station Road and the Lee Valley Car Park – to help manage traffic while the bridge is closed. This has been enforced with signs and CCTV cameras.

Unfortunately an increasing number of drivers have been ignoring the one-way system, placing both pedestrians and motorists at risk. Residents and workers have also been experiencing abusive behaviour and threats from motorists ignoring the signs and driving carelessly.

Therefore, following advice from the police, from Monday 5 August the section of Old Nazeing Road between Station Road and the Lee Valley Car Park will be closed completely until the bridge works are complete.

The road will be physically blocked off to prevent vehicles entering. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and the surrounding car parks will be unaffected.

Vehicles will now need to enter and leave Old Nazeing Road at the southern junction with Nazeing New Road junction and follow the diversion route via the A121.

Details of the diversion route are online at www.roadworks.org

Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways said: “It’s extremely disappointing that the persistent poor behaviour of a few drivers has meant that we have to close this section of road. We know that this will cause more disruption for people travelling in the area and I’d like to apologise in advance for that. In the end though we have to put the safety of both our residents and our workers first, and unfortunately that means closing this section of road until the bridge works are complete.”
