Hertfordshire County Council’s Hertfordshire Museum Development Team is calling on residents to take part in the public vote for Hertfordshire’s ‘Object of the Year’ in the upcoming Awards for Excellence in Hertfordshire’s Museums.

Hertfordshire Association of Museums (HAM) is hosting the 2018 awards which celebrate the work of Hertfordshire’s museums and heritage organisations, with a focus on the achievements and contributions made by these organisations to the local community.

Four of the five award categories will be selected by judges from the national museum community, and the final category ‘Object of the Year’ will be awarded through a public vote.

This will go to the museum with the highest number of votes for their object, with six items up for the vote including a steam train cab, Roman Mellefiori dishes dating from about 200 AD and a motorcycle made in Stevenage in 1937.

Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Education, Libraries and Localism, said:

“The Awards for Excellence in Hertfordshire’s Museums are a great opportunity to celebrate the amazing work of staff and volunteers, and we are thrilled that residents can get involved with this year’s awards.

“It also gives museums and heritage organisations a chance to showcase the brilliant work they do, and make the public aware of the importance of museums.

“I encourage residents to take part and vote in the online survey.”

The four award categories chosen by the judges are detailed below:

Transformation- Highlighting a new project which has made the museum more resilient, entrepreneurial or innovative

Hertfordshire Heritage Hero- A celebration of a volunteer or member of staff who has done something exceptional in the past year

Accessibility – Awarded to the museum which has provided the best range of activities reaching the widest possible audience or which has made a significant change to their practice to encourage new audiences

Project of the Year – Awarded to the museum which has demonstrated to the judges that their project has made a significant difference to their local community or their own organisation.

HAM is an umbrella organisation representing museums across Hertfordshire and, in conjunction with the County Museum Development team, works to ensure that the museums stay healthy and resilient.

Support your local museum and vote for their object; voting closes on 11 November 2018.
