Employer mentoring

We are looking for volunteer employer mentors with a wide range of careers, backgrounds, ages and interests to
support young people across Hertfordshire. 

What will I be doing?

YC Hertfordshire in partnership with the Careers and
Enterprise Company offers an employer mentoring programme for students in
school years 8 – 10 (aged 12 – 15) who are at risk of disengaging from
education. This includes students who are underachieving, students who lack focus and direction as well as lacking motivation and aspirations. This programme aims to help raise aspirations for young people, improve their education and support young people towards a career pathway.

Employer mentors will:

  • Meet on a regular basis with an allocated young person and support them to reach goals
  • Ensure that the young person’s views and wishes are heard
  • Motivate the young person towards their future aspirations
  • Encourage the young person to use their initiative

What skills or experience do I need?

Mentors should have the following skills and experiences:

  • The ability to develop trusting relationships with young people
  • The ability to motivate and inspire
  • Communication and active listening skills
  • To be genuine, open and honest, and understand the importance of confidentiality
  • The ability to recognise the boundaries in a mentoring relationship

How much time do I need to give?

You will need to provide an hour every 2 weeks over the period of 6 months.

Where will I be located?

The employer mentoring programme is running in 12 schools across Hertfordshire. We will match you with a young person who attends a local school to where you live or work. You will meet with your mentee at school, during school hours.

What will I gain from the role?

Opportunity volunteers will gain:

  • An introductory training course in mentoring skills and safeguarding young people
  • Opportunities to take part in further training
  • Experience of working with young people
  • The opportunity to develop skills in communication, active listening, empathy, negotiating, challenging and questioning techniques

What support will I be given?

All mentors are given training and are supported throughout the process by regular on-going supervision.
