Breakaway for Carers
Breakaway for Carers is a free service, which allows carers to have a break by arranging for someone else to take over for a few hours.
What will I be doing?
You'll be keeping an older or disabled person company by taking part in activities such as:
- having a chat
- reading to them
- playing a game
- going for a walk
We may ask you to make them a drink or a snack. We may also ask you to take them to and from the toilet.
We won't ask you to do any housework or provide personal care, such as washing or dressing.
What skills or experience do I need?
Some experience of caring for a dependent person would be useful, such as a member of your family, through your job or other voluntary work.
If you have experience of caring for people who are confused or who have dementia that would be very helpful but it's not essential.
How much time do I need to give?
2-3 hours each week.
Where will I be located?
We are located in:
- Abbots Langley
- Hemel Hempstead
- Kings Langley
- St Albans
What will I gain from the role?
Your time will give a carer the chance to have a little time to themselves to recharge their batteries, do some shopping or follow a hobby.
Many of our volunteers find it very satisfying to be able to make a difference to someone in this way. They also find that the work helps them to increase their confidence and learn new skills.
What support will I be given?
You will receive a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, an induction and information about our policies and safe working practices.
We'll also invite you to some short training sessions, at times to suit you. These are designed to help you feel confident and well prepared for volunteering.
- Communication skills
- Care of older people
- Dementia awareness
- Health and safety
A manager will be there to support you, we'll hold quarterly meetings, and send you a regular newsletter to keep you up to date.
Will I receive expenses?
We will pay for your travel expenses to and from home visits, as well as training courses.
