Located on the former site of Hatfield Aerodrome, the new Howe Dell Primary School is intended to be a pathfinder project for integrated wrap around care and sustainable building design, setting new school standards for Hertfordshire.

As well as a primary school the project includes day care and nursery education for children aged five years, an extended day for 5-11 year old children and a community centre. The facilities provide increased building occupancy, with further evening/weekend community use. The project is due to be completed in autumn 2007.

The sustainable approach to the school applies to all aspects of the building design; structure, services and landscaping, proposed occupancy, construction, educational curriculum and operational management including furniture, fittings, waste management and catering. Alternative energy sources on site include solar and photovoltaic panels, a 50KW wind turbine, and inter-seasonal heat store, ‘thermodeck’ heat recovery system and on site water drainage strategy.

An on-going consultation process has been carried out over three years with the County Council, community representatives and the existing school Head Teacher, governors, pupil and parents to ensure collaboration with key stakeholder and clients.
