Principle: The more difficult it is to get into a building or property through the use of robust, lockable doors and windows and controlling access through site or property entrances, the stronger the deterrent to crime.

Lockable gates, physical boundary features and robust lockable doors and windows all reduce the likelihood of private property being broken into.  However these features need to be balanced with achieving other objectives such as aesthetics and disabled access.

The Secured by Design web site provides recommendations for windows, doors, locks and other security measures which satisfy police standards: securedbydesign.com/standards
