Successful closure of Independent Support programme

Alongside the SEND reforms of 2014, the government launched the Independent Support programme. This provides young people and parents with access to support through the transfer of their Statement of Special Educational Needs, (SEN) to an Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP). In Hertfordshire this is being delivered by the charity KIDS and the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS).

Independent Support was a time limited programme planned to run for two years, but with extensions it ran for four years while all statements were transferred to EHCPs. The programme will now finish on 31 July 2018.

As a result KIDS Independent Support service in Hertfordshire will end on 31 July 2018.  However all other services provided by the KIDS HUBS will not be affected and so continue to contact them for information and support regarding SEN and disability matters as usual.

Meanwhile, Hertfordshire SENDIASS continues to offer impartial information, advice and support to parents and young people through the EHC processes as well as all other issues related to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). They can be contacted on telephone 01992 555847, by email

The Council for Disabled Children have compiled Frequently asked questions and advice and information regarding EHC processes can be found on the IPSEA website.

The CONTACT national helpline and website can also be accessed for information and support.

Information regarding Hertfordshire’s EHC processes can be found here through the SEND Local Offer.
