We recruit full-time and on-call firefighters across Hertfordshire throughout the year depending on demand and vacancies.
What’s involved in being a full-time firefighter in Hertfordshire?

Full-time fire fighters go to many different emergency situations including road accidents, fires, chemical incidents and rescues.
You’ll need problem solving skills and initiative to make sure issues are resolved quickly and calmly. Firefighters deal with people who may be injured, distressed or confused so you'll need good communication skills.
The role of the firefighter requires a certain level of physical fitness, which is tested during the selection process.
Other skills you need include confidence, resilience, integrity and the ability to adapt to different situations.
A firefighters responsibilities include:
- responding to emergency situations
- educating people on how to prevent fires and how to protect themselves
- home fire safety visits
- being a positive role model and taking part in educational schemes like Princes Trust, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and LiFe courses
- working with other emergency services to effectively solve problems.
Before you apply

- You need a full UK driving licence with your correct postal address on – online DVLA checks will be carried out for successful candidates. Firefighters work at locations across the county, so you'll need a full licence to drive service vehicles. The address must be correct, as we'll use this to check you live in an eligible area.
- You should have the right to work in the UK.
- You should be 18 or over. There is no upper age limit for applying.
- You must not have any unspent criminal convictions.
- You'll need a minimum of GCSE A*-C grade in both English and Maths or equivalent. In the UK the equivalent is Key Skills/Basic Skills or Adult Literacy and Numeracy Level 2. The role of a firefighter in increasingly technical, and it is important for firefighters to have these levels of education.

Become a on-call firefighter
On-call firefighters are men and women who respond to emergencies when they’re alerted by our fire control, who handle the 999 calls across Hertfordshire.
Many give cover during weekdays, evenings and weekends. They usually have another job during the week too.
Before you apply...

- you must be able to get to your chosen fire station within 4 minutes.
Stage 1 - Apply

Stage 2 - Attend a selection day
You'll be invited to come to a selection day which you must attend. Spaces are limited and we will give you a months' notice.
In the morning you'll take part in written tests. If you pass these you'll be invited to complete physical tests in the afternoon. You have up to 3 attempts to pass the written tests.
If you have a GCSE A*-C or 9-4 in Maths and English Language or equivalent (equivalents are any other qualifications that contain a Maths and English Language module), you will only be required to complete the Physical test at Assessment stage. Original copies will be required at Assessment stage to evidence this.

Stage 3 - Formal Interview
If you pass the written and practical tests you’ll be invited to come to a formal interview.

Stage 4 - Full medical
If you're successful in your interview you need to go to a medical appointment with our Occupational Health Department. You need to complete some medical questionnaires and an opticians report before the appointment.
The medical is in 3 stages:
- medical tests with the Occupational Health Adviser
- an examination and DVLA paperwork
- a fitness ‘bleep’ test with the Service Fitness Adviser. You'll need to achieve a particular standard to pass (level 8.7).
No medical information is released without your consent and we're only given advice on whether or not you are fit enough for us to employ you. Your information will be recorded as a baseline for your future medicals, which you must take every 3 years.

Stage 5 - Training course
We have a timetable for the next training course. You’re paid hourly for attending the course.
You might be placed on a waiting list of up to 12 months depending on vacancies at stations. You might need to do a re-test when a vacancy is available.
The majority of vacancies need you to be able to give cover on weekdays during the day. This needs to be agreed before you’re offered a place on the training course.
How much will I earn if I'm offered a place as a on-call firefighter?
You receive a basic annual fee for the number of hours cover you agree to do. You also get payment for each call out to an incident you do.
You’ll have to go to a drill night at your station for 3 hours 1 evening per week for training with your colleagues, which you will be paid for.
An estimate of average earnings when qualified is based on:
- having served 2 years
- contracted 90 hours cover a week
- 48 drill nights per year
- attended at least 50 incidents in the year
- 20 hours of training courses per year (in addition to your drill nights)
- 30 hours extra community work a year
The total is £5495 per year before deductions (approx. £450 per month).
