Hazard House

Home fire safety advice from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service

Which hazards can you find?

Take a quick look around your home. Which of these can you find?

  1. Blocked escape routes
  2. Unattended cooking
  3. Washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers left on overnight or when the house is empty
  4. Broken smoke alarms
  5. Candles left burning
  6. Mobile phones charging under a pillow
  7. Overloaded plug sockets
  8. Clothing left near heaters

Test your smoke alarm

The easiest way to protect your home and family from fire is with working smoke alarms - get them, install them, test them. They could save your life.

Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they are in good working order.

You need at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home – having one downstairs might not be enough to wake
you if there is a fire.

Do you have an older or vulnerable relative or neighbour? When checking on them, offer to test their smoke alarm too.
