A day in the life of a Graduate Civil Engineer

Dimitros is a Graduate Civil Engineer on our Graduate Rotation Scheme. He's been working for us in the Highways Major Projects Team, who take on large scale projects to improve Hertfordshire’s highways.

Highways Major Projects team

Dimi’s job on the team includes creating detailed designs using computer software, project management and site supervision. There are usually several projects running at the same time so being able to prioritise the workload is essential.

A site visit may be necessary to verify information about a project and, if there are ongoing works on a site, Dimi’s job would involve supervising. He’d be responsible for a site visit and making sure the works are done according to the designs that have been given by the contractor.

Dimi enjoys the variety the job brings and that he gets to do exciting things and has to think in different ways to find solutions to all kinds of problems.

Graduate schemes at Hertfordshire County Council

Dimi is on the Graduate Rotation Scheme which means he changes roles every 3–6 months for 2 years. His first placement was with the Bridges and Structures team at County Hall. Now he's based at Hatfield working with the Major Projects team for 6 months. One of the benefits of this scheme is that at the end of the 2 years he'll be able to choose the team he would prefer to work in permanently.
