Even though the weather may not feel that cold at the moment our winter service starts on 1 October 2018 and runs to 30 April 2019. During this time Hertfordshire County Council receive a countywide forecast and our Duty Officers make a daily decision on whether to send the gritters out or not.
When we decide to grit, 58 gritters go out and we grit 1,400 miles of the county roads. Depending on the weather conditions we can go out with either 15gms or 8gms of salt per square metre. This means that we can use 300 tonnes or 186 tonnes depending on the nature of the run.
Follow our daily decisions on our twitter page #GritterTwitter.
We only tweet positive decisions though and we don't tell you if there is no action.
Resident associations, community groups, schools, parish and town councils can apply for salt.
See our winter self-help page for more information.
