Put it Away

We'd like you to share your stories or experiences of things that have happened as a consequence of using a mobile whilst driving. These stories will support our campaign to reduce mobile phone use whilst driving in Herts.

What's the problem?

  • In the average time it takes to read a text on the motorway, a driver will have travelled the length of a football pitch without looking at the road.
  • Despite the risks, a quarter of Hertfordshire drivers surveyed admitted to using their handheld mobile phones behind the wheel in the last 6 months.
  • That's why we're launching a new campaign telling drivers with mobile phones to Put it Away at the start of their journey.

What's the law?

  • On 1st March the penalties were doubled to a £200 fine and 6 points on your licence. This means an immediate ban for new drivers.
  • It's illegal to use a handheld mobile phone while driving - even when you're at a red light or queueing in traffic.
  • Police in Hertfordshire are stepping up unmarked patrols as part of our campaign.

Who's organising this campaign?

  • The Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership brings together all the organisations in the county that work to reduce the number of people killed or injured on Hertfordshire's roads.
  • Follow us on Twitter at @roadsafetyherts for updates on the partnership's work.
