Why is it happening?

The 111 year old structure has reached a point in its life where its condition has to be addressed. Decades of corrosion have prevented the structure from working in the way it was designed and essential maintenance is required to prevent further deterioration to unsafe levels.

Work includes the construction of new concrete foundations to support the temporary bridge lifting equipment and replacement of the original bridge bearings.

During this time we will also be resurfacing the footways and carrying out other structural alterations to improve durability and prevent the need for any further major maintenance for decades to come
