Our Reminiscence Collection was initially set up for customers with dementia and was mainly used in care homes and centres. Now the collection is much larger and can be borrowed by all library customers. Items can be borrowed for up to 3 weeks, or 6 weeks if you have a concessionary Carers or Centres membership card.
The purpose of this specialist area of library stock is to help those with dementia to remember the past and to share their experiences with their families and carers. Reminiscing together can stimulate happy memories and facilitate conversations and activities across the generations.
We now offer almost 100 themed Reminiscence boxes of varying sizes, comprising a wide range of topics including childhood memories, life across the decades (1950s to 1980s), transport, royalty, sport and hobbies. The boxes contain a selection of books, artefacts, toys, puzzles and sensory items. We also offer other individual stock items such as books, DVDs, CDs, talking books and large format easy jigsaws for adults. The Reminiscence Collection is based in our Central Stocks Unit in Welwyn Garden City, but it can all be reserved for collection from any Hertfordshire library.
There are also other books about dementia available in many of our libraries, as well as the Reading Well Books on Prescription recommended titles list
