Hertfordshire County Council’s library service is excited to announce that Mischief Makers, Summer Reading Challenge 2018 will launch on Saturday 14th July in all Hertfordshire Libraries.
Overseen by The Reading Agency, the Summer Reading Challenge is a free activity that takes place in libraries across the UK, encouraging children of all ages and abilities to maintain their reading skills throughout the holidays.
We’re challenging children to read six library books over the summer and return to the library to tell us about them. Children can read anything they choose, including story books, fact books, talking books, and even e-books (available to download for free from our e-library).
Whilst tackling this year’s challenge, young readers will also search Beanotown for a buried treasure, helped by the most famous mischief makers of them all – Dennis and Gnasher! As they report back on what they have read, they’ll collect stickers that feature the clues needed to find the treasure.
A medal and a certificate will be awarded to every child who finishes their six books. Children who finish by Saturday 8th September will also have the chance to win a ticket to a special Mega Mischief Makers Mash-Up author event during November half-term.
To get involved, all children need to do is visit their local library from 14thJuly to collect a starter pack, while stocks last. The challenge ends on 8th September.
The Summer Reading Challenge has proven a huge success with Hertfordshire families year after year; in 2017, 21681 children took part across the county. As one parent commented, ‘My son really enjoyed the Summer Reading Challenge 2017; he loved coming to talk to the staff and volunteers about the books he’d read, and enjoyed collecting the stickers. He is already excited for the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 and can’t wait to get started!’
