Summer Reading Challenge 2019 – Space Chase has landed!
Every summer, all 46 Hertfordshire Libraries gear up for the national Summer Reading Challenge. It’s a hugely important and highly successful scheme for us. We want to help children maintain the reading habit over the long summer holidays and provide an enjoyable experience for the whole family. Despite its name though, for staff the preparation doesn’t just take place over summer. It all begins a long time before, in the previous autumn. Once The Reading Agency announces the theme, a dedicated working group is put together to begin planning, ordering materials, arranging activities, creating publicity and advertising campaigns and training staff and volunteers. It doesn’t stop there as once the challenge is over there is the prize draw event in October. Every child who completes the challenge by 7th September has a chance to attend an exciting event with author Steve Cole.
This year we are also selling branded kitbags in a selection of libraries. These cost £2 and are perfect for children to carry all their library books to and fro. So make sure you don’t miss out as stocks are limited. Libraries selling them will display this poster.
For further fun, the official website www.spacechase.org.uk has competitions, a book sorter to help children choose their next book, a reading club where they can meet the authors and features clips of celebrities reading extracts from their favourite children’s book. As children collect the stickers they will see special codes on them which they can use to unlock extra content on the website. There is also a section with information for parents and carers.
As this year’s theme is Space Chase, commemorating the 50th anniversary of man’s first steps on the moon, the team have had fun conjuring up space themed activities for the launch day – 13th July.
