Sawbridgeworth Community Library News
Here in Sawbridgeworth the Library has been going through some major changes. We are still being supported by Hertfordshire Library Service; however we are also working towards becoming community led. Our volunteer programme has got off to a great start and we already have around 25 volunteers. This is excellent, having only just started with two “drop-in” sessions in April, where recruiting began. With a great response to these, the library service then provided some very successful induction sessions. The new volunteers were treated to two sessions filled with information on how the library runs and I’m pretty sure no one left without learning something new about what services the library has to offer. Although there was a lot of information given in those sessions, the real learning has now commenced now that we are learning how to do some those tasks on a daily basis. Our volunteers have been shadowing staff from our buddy Library, Bishops Stortford, since mid-May and we’re now well on our way to achieving our Community Library status later in the year!
Of course the Library isn’t just run by those you see in there, we also have a Steering Committee whose members are working behind the scenes to support the everyday running of the library and also planning ahead for the future.
We also have a new page on Facebook, “Sawbridgeworth Library” and a Twitter account “@sawbridgeworthcommunitylibrary” so look us up and click that “Like” button!
More induction sessions will also be organised for new volunteers later in the year, as we are still looking for more volunteers both in the Library and on the Steering committee. If this is something that appeals to you then please get in touch by emailing us on email@example.com and become part of this exciting new chapter of Sawbridgeworth Community Library.
Opportunities in our community libraries
During July and August we will be launching more community library projects, with further drop-in dates and induction sessions for new volunteers.
If you would like to support any of these libraries, either as a frontline volunteer or on the steering group, why not come to one of our drop-in sessions to find out more? They will be held in the following locations on these dates:
Brookmans Park Library: Monday 2 July
Cuffley Library: Friday 6 July
Leverstock Green Library: Tuesday 3 July and Wednesday 25 July
All drop-in sessions will be from 2pm to 4pm.
They are very informal Q&A sessions and there is no need to book a place, so just pop in for a chat if you’re free!
Induction training sessions
Induction sessions for new volunteers are then scheduled at the following libraries later in the summer. We ask that all new volunteers attend both a Session 1 date and a Session 2 date. Please email the address for each location for further information or to book your place on the sessions:
Session 1: Friday 3 August or Thursday 9 August
Session 2: Thursday 16 August or Friday 24 August
Cuffley and Brookmans Park Libraries (joint sessions to be held at Cuffley library)
Session 1: Thursday 2 August or Monday 6 August
Session 2: Monday 13 August or Thursday 23 August
Email: firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com

Session 2: Monday 17 September or Friday 21 September
All of the above induction sessions will be held from 10am to 12pm
Sawbridgeworth Community Library
Volunteers have been supporting the service with staff alongside them for their ongoing training since early May. It’s been a great start so far, with well over 20 volunteers, but we would like to recruit some more volunteers for this community library.
Additional induction sessions will therefore be held on:
Friday 10 Aug from 10am to 12pm or Tuesday 4 September from 3pm to 5pm
Friday 17 August from 10am to 12pm or Tuesday 11 September from 3pm to 5pm
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm your places
London Colney Community Library
We also now have an established team of volunteers who have been with us for over a year at London Colney Library, but we would like to welcome some more too! Both on the frontline serving the public and behind the scenes supporting the steering group, there are ample opportunities for supporting this busy community library and making new friends and developing new skills.
If you would like to join the steering committee, we are currently looking for a Chairperson to work in partnership with us to jointly run the library as a volunteer led community project. We are also looking for a Treasurer and a Secretary. Our informal meetings are held approximately every six weeks. Please contact us here if you would like to know more: email@example.com
