CMS are working in partnership with East Herts Council and the Environment Agency to improve fish passage and river habitats on the rivers Beane and Lea through Hertford. These rivers have historically been modified with a number of weirs which prevent the movement of fish and impound the river, causing siltation and habitat degradation of the upstream river channel.
We'll be carrying out a feasibility study to explore options for improving fish and eel passage at seven weirs in the town, including at Hertford Castle and on Hartham Common. This could be achieved by removing, lowering or notching the weirs or installing fish passes. We'll also be looking at improving habitats along the river, by establishing marginal vegetation and narrowing the channel in places. We should have firm proposals by summer 2018.
