Hertfordshire County Council

Practical Conservation Volunteers create and restore wildlife habitats and work to improve access to the countryside.

What you'll be doing

In the winter months tasks tend to involve habitat management, including hedge planting, coppice work, improving ponds or scrub clearance. In the summer months, construction work such as building a path or gate would be a more likely activity.

Skills and experience

Experience isn't necessary as training is provided. However, you will be asked to supply any relevant personal information such as related experience or any medical conditions which may impact upon the type of work offered.

Time you need to give

Although activities generally run from 10am-3.30pm, you can attend for part of the day only, provided you arrange your own transport. You can choose to join us every week or occasionally to fit in with when we are working in your local area.

Where you'll be located

You can be located in a number of different locations across the county.

What you'll gain from the role

Showing ongoing commitment could mean that you can receive a pair of overalls and claim £25 towards the cost of a pair of safety boots.

The midweek volunteers have 2 annual social events, a summer tour and a Christmas task. These are enjoyable get-togethers which usually consist of a guided walk around a local nature reserve, a meal, and a chance for us to thank all the volunteers for their hard work.

Support you'll be given

  • We'll provide you with an induction and introductory meetings
  • When you're out on an activity you'll be paired up with more experienced volunteers who will provide support
  • A range of training opportunities

Expenses

You will receive travel expenses to and from training days if you are using public transport or your own vehicle.
